How To Setup Your Own Linux Network

Informal instructions:
Preconditions:
1.
The Linux
System has been installed. (We used
Red Hat Linux 6.0. If different,
then the following might not apply.)
2.
You have
root access.
3.
You have
installed the network cards and know the hardware information about them (such
as maker, type, etc.)
4. You know the name of the machine to be installed, as well as the IP address of the machine (which you can probably make up if the entire HackNet is not connected to the rest of the world), the subnet mask for the machine/network, the IP address of the nameserver, and the default gateway of the HackNet.
5.
You know the IP address of the router.
Instructions:
1.
Log in as
root.
2.
Run netconf.
3.
A menu
choice appears. Hit Enter on
the first choice, Basic Host Information.
4.
Enter the
name of that machine, such as www.cnn.com.
5.
Hit the
down arrow key.
6.
Hit the
space bar to select Enabled.
7.
Hit the
down arrow key and continue hitting the space bar until the Manual mode
is selected.
8.
Hit the
down arrow key and enter the primary + domain name of the machine (this should
be the same as #4.)
9.
Hit the
down arrow key and enter the alias for the machine (the primary name).
In the above example, it would be www.
10.
Hit the
down arrow key and enter the IP address for the machine.
11.
Hit the
down arrow key and enter the subnet mask information (this will be dependent on
the number of machines on your subnetworks.
12.
Hit the
down arrow key and enter the net device (the network card for that
adaptor.)
13.
Hit the
down arrow key and enter the .
14.
Continue
hitting the down arrow key until the cursor is in the Enabled menu for
the following Adaptor.
15.
Repeat
steps 6 – 14 for each network card.
16.
Press the
Tab key until Accept is selected.
Press Enter.
17.
Hit the
down arrow key and hit the Enter key (thereby selecting Name Server
Specification (DNS)).
18.
Press the
Space Bar to select DNS Usage.
19.
Press the
down arrow key.
20.
Press the
down arrow key and enter the IP address of the nameserver.
21.
Repeat
step 20 for each nameserver.
22.
Press the
down arrow key until the Search Domain is selected.
23.
Enter the
information, if desired, and then press the down arrow key.
24.
Repeat
step 23 for each new search domain.
25.
Press the
Tab key until Accept is selected.
Press Enter.
26.
Press the
down arrow key and press Enter.
27.
Press Enter
key to enter the default gateway information.
28.
If this
machine is not a host, then enter the IP address of the router and disable Enable
Routing. Otherwise, if this
machine IS a host, then enter the default gateway (usually the gateway that
leads to the rest of the Internet or larger network) and enable Enable
Routing.
29.
Press the
Tab key until Accept is selected.
Press Enter.
30.
Press the
down arrow key until Configure – the routed daemon is highlighted.
Press Enter.
Postconditions:
1.
The
router machine will have a different subnet for each network card.
2.
The
router will transfer packets from one subnet (one of its cards) to the
corresponding network (one of its other cards.)
